 Hillcrest Hurricanes Rep Division

“The Original Hurricanes”

The Hillcrest Hurricanes were created by a constitutional amendment at the 1997 Annual General Meeting proposed by Gail and Randy Armstrong.  Up to then, Hillcrest did not have all-star or Rep teams but preferred to run a house league only program.  Previous attempts at entering all-star teams in tournaments were less than successful.

In 1998, Gail and Randy Armstrong and Joe Petejan formed the first Hillcrest Hurricanes team, an Under-13 select team.  Taking the best players from the house league they entered a local competitive soccer league.   They were in first place for most of the season until vacation and injuries slowed them in August and were overtaken for first place.   In the League Cup playdowns, the Hurricanes defeated the third place team to advance to the finals.  In a tense, hard fought championship game, Hillcrest allowed a  goal scored on a penalty kick with seconds left in regulation time to finish as league finalists.  All in all, a remarkable season.

In 1999 this team returned, learning the lessons of the previous season well and entering the U-14 division were extremely successful  ending up in 1st place and winning the League Cup.

In 2000 they entered as an U-15 team and finished in 2nd place.  In the League Cup, Hillcrest fought hard but lost in a tough game to their arch rivals.

In 2007, many of the players from this original Hurricanes team came back together and entered the adult division finishing in 2nd place but winning the playoffs defeating the first place team.
